About BioGrid

BioGrid Australia is a not-for-profit organisation providing Australia's only true end-to-end health research data service. We connect researchers with secure, integrated access to health and biomedical datasets - combining trusted governance, advanced technical capability, and responsive support to help research teams get from data to discovery faster.

Founded by and for the health and medical research community, BioGrid has been operating for more than twenty years, supporting research across hospitals, universities, and research institutes throughout Australia.

BioGrid Australia is a not-for-profit company owned by a consortium of member institutions - hospitals, universities, and research institutes that form the core of our collaborative network.

The organisation is governed by a board of directors drawn from the research and health community, ensuring that BioGrid's priorities remain aligned with the needs of the researchers and institutions it serves.

BioGrid is Australia's only provider of a complete, integrated end-to-end research data service. Unlike siloed or ad-hoc data options, BioGrid combines data linkage, curation, governance support, ethics guidance, project analysis, and ongoing operational support within a single, trusted platform.

Our federated architecture keeps patient data physically located at source institutions while enabling integrated access - a model that is unique in Australia and provides a stronger privacy protection profile than centralised alternatives.

BioGrid supports a wide range of health and medical research, including observational studies, longitudinal cohort studies, clinical trials support, registry-based research, translational research, and large-scale multi-institutional programs.

Our platform spans disease areas including oncology, neurosciences, endocrinology, respiratory health, and more, with data types covering clinical outcomes, genomic, imaging, biospecimen, and administrative records.

Getting Started

Researchers at BioGrid member and collaborator institutions can submit applications for data access through BioGrid's online application system. If you are unsure whether your institution is a member, or if you are from a non-member institution interested in working with BioGrid, contact our team directly and we will guide you through the options available.

The earlier the better. Engaging BioGrid at the study conception stage (before your protocol is finalised or your grant application is submitted) gives you the greatest advantage.

Early engagement allows us to assess data feasibility, help shape your study design around what the data can genuinely support, advise on governance pathways, and contribute to your grant application with formal feasibility evidence and infrastructure documentation.

Researchers who engage BioGrid early consistently find the process faster and better supported than those who approach us after funding is secured.

Absolutely. You do not need a fully formed protocol to have a productive initial conversation with BioGrid. Our team is experienced in helping researchers explore what is possible - assessing what data exists, what cohorts are accessible, and what research questions the available data could credibly support.

We are happy to engage at the earliest exploratory stage.

Membership provides the broadest and most streamlined access to BioGrid's platform and services. However, researchers from non-member institutions may be able to access BioGrid's services through collaborative arrangements with member institutions, or by engaging BioGrid directly as a collaborator on a specific project.

Contact our team to discuss the options relevant to your situation.

Yes. BioGrid provides formal support for grant applications, including feasibility assessments, data availability reports, infrastructure capability statements, and detailed descriptions of the governance and technical frameworks that will support your study.

We can prepare documentation to the requirements of specific funding schemes, including NHMRC and ARC mechanisms. To request a research quote or infrastructure description for your application, contact our team as early in your preparation process as possible.

Data Access and Linkage

BioGrid provides access to a broad range of health and biomedical data types, including clinical and treatment data, genomic data, medical imaging (including MRI and PET), biospecimen data, administrative and outcomes data, general practice and primary care records, and data from national and state-based clinical registries.

Data spans multiple disease areas and is drawn from BioGrid's network of member hospitals, universities, and research institutes across Australia. For a detailed overview of available datasets, contact our team or visit the Available Data section of our website.

BioGrid uses privacy-protecting record linkage technology to match patient records across different institutions and datasets without transmitting personal identifiers.

Cryptographically derived linkage keys (generated from patient identifying information but not directly re-identifiable) are used to establish matches between records while the underlying personal details remain protected at the source institution.

This approach delivers linkage accuracy comparable to traditional identifier-based methods with a substantially stronger privacy protection profile.

BioGrid uses two complementary privacy-protecting linkage platforms. GRHANITE, developed by the University of Melbourne, has underpinned BioGrid's linkage capability for over a decade and was the first privacy-protecting linkage technology deployed at scale for multi-institutional health research in Australia.

BioGrid is now implementing LinXmart, developed by Curtin University's Curtin Centre for Data Linkage, as its next-generation linkage platform. LinXmart is ISO 27001 certified, fast, scalable, and compatible with BioGrid's planned cloud-based research environment.

It is already in use by the Victorian Agency for Health Information, NSW Health's Centre for Health Record Linkage, and other leading Australian health data organisations.

Yes. BioGrid's privacy-protecting linkage technology was specifically developed to overcome the privacy barriers that make cross-jurisdictional linkage difficult using traditional approaches.

By using cryptographic linkage keys rather than personal identifiers, BioGrid can link data across state and jurisdictional boundaries without exposing identifying information or requiring data to cross institutional boundaries.

BioGrid has successfully supported multi-state and international research collaborations.

BioGrid's platform provides authorised researchers with real-time access to continuously updated, integrated datasets - not historical snapshots.

This is a significant advantage for studies tracking treatment outcomes over time, monitoring patient populations, or supporting clinical trial recruitment where identifying eligible patients quickly is critical.

The timeline for data access depends on the complexity of your study, the number of institutions and datasets involved, and the governance approvals required. BioGrid works to make this process as efficient as possible, and early engagement (particularly at the design and governance planning stages) is the most effective way to minimise the time between approval and access.

Our team can provide a realistic timeline estimate once we understand the specific requirements of your project.

Privacy and Security

Patient privacy is protected through multiple reinforcing layers. At the architectural level, BioGrid's federated model keeps patient data physically located at the source institution at all times - there is no central repository where data from multiple institutions is aggregated.

Privacy-protecting record linkage technology ensures that patient records can be matched across institutions without personal identifiers ever being transmitted. Access controls ensure researchers can only access the specific data their approved study requires. Comprehensive audit logs record all data access activity.

Together, these controls create a privacy protection environment that operates at the structural level, not just the policy level.

No. BioGrid's federated architecture keeps patient data physically located at the source institution at all times. What BioGrid provides is a secure, governed connection across distributed data holdings - not a copy or centralisation of that data. Researchers access integrated information through BioGrid's platform without that information ever needing to be transferred or aggregated in ways that create privacy risk.

BioGrid's security architecture includes encryption of data in transit and at rest, multi-factor authentication for all platform users, role-based access controls, network segmentation, continuous monitoring for anomalous activity, and regular independent security assessments including penetration testing.

Access is granted on a study-by-study basis, strictly limited to the data parameters of each approved study, and automatically expires at the end of the approved study period.

BioGrid's operations are designed to comply with the Privacy Act 1988, the Australian Privacy Principles, applicable state health privacy legislation, and the specific governance requirements of our member institutions and data custodians.

Our compliance framework is reviewed and updated regularly to remain current with evolving regulatory requirements. BioGrid can provide detailed compliance documentation to support ethics applications and institutional governance assessments.

BioGrid maintains incident response processes designed to contain, investigate, and resolve security events rapidly. In the event of a notifiable data breach, BioGrid follows the requirements of Australia's Notifiable Data Breaches scheme, including timely notification to affected parties and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner where required.

We are committed to transparent communication in the event of any security incident and to continuous improvement of our security posture informed by each event.

Governance and Ethics

Yes. Ethics approval is required for all research involving patient data, regardless of the infrastructure used to access it. BioGrid does not replace the ethics process - we help you navigate it.

Our team can assist with identifying the appropriate HREC pathway, preparing ethics application documentation, coordinating across multiple institutions for multi-site studies, and responding to requests for additional information from ethics committees.

Yes. Multi-site ethics approval is one of the areas where BioGrid's experience adds the most value. We are familiar with lead HREC arrangements under the National Mutual Acceptance scheme, the governance requirements of our member institutions, and the practical realities of coordinating approvals across multiple sites simultaneously.

We can help map the approval pathway for your study and support the documentation and coordination processes required to move efficiently through it.

Data accessed through BioGrid remains owned and governed by the institutions and data custodians that hold it. BioGrid does not claim ownership of member or partner data.

Our role is to provide the technical infrastructure, governance frameworks, and operational support that enables authorised researchers to access that data for approved research purposes - not to hold, control, or commercialise the data itself.

BioGrid has established frameworks for ethical industry collaboration that protect the integrity of research and the independence of investigators.

Pharmaceutical and other industry partners can access relevant research data through BioGrid as a single, trusted supply partner, with permissions managed by the relevant institutional data custodians.

BioGrid facilitates access transparently and in compliance with governance requirements, ensuring that industry involvement does not create undue influence on research teams or outcomes.

Yes. BioGrid's governance frameworks and technical controls are designed to support research involving sensitive health data, including genomic data, mental health data, and data relating to stigmatised conditions.

The additional governance requirements that apply to sensitive data categories are accommodated within BioGrid's framework, and our team can advise on the specific considerations applicable to your study.

For Institutions and Data Custodians

Institutions interested in BioGrid membership are welcome to contact our team to begin the conversation. Membership involves signing BioGrid's Collaboration Agreement and connecting your institution's relevant data holdings to BioGrid's platform through a supported technical integration process.

BioGrid's team manages the technical aspects of this process, and our governance team works with your institution to establish the data access and sharing arrangements appropriate to your data holdings and institutional requirements.

No. BioGrid's federated model is specifically designed to ensure that contributing institutions retain full governance and physical custody of their data at all times. Your institution determines the conditions under which its data can be accessed for research, and those conditions are enforced at the platform level.

BioGrid manages the technical integration and research access processes - your institution retains control.

BioGrid maintains comprehensive, tamper-evident audit logs of all platform activity, recording who accessed what data, when, and for what approved purpose. These logs are available to data custodians and institutional administrators, providing the transparency needed to fulfil governance and reporting obligations.

BioGrid can provide custodians with regular access reports and supports any governance review or compliance assessment that may be required.

BioGrid welcomes institutional IT and security assessments and is committed to providing the technical documentation, security frameworks, and governance information needed to support a thorough review.

Our technical team is available to engage directly with institutional IT and security teams, explain our architecture, discuss integration requirements, and address any security or compliance questions.

We have supported this process across a wide range of institutional environments and can provide detailed specifications and reference documentation to facilitate your assessment.

BioGrid's team can discuss the range of participation models available to institutions at different stages of engagement. Full membership provides the broadest access to BioGrid's services and the greatest integration with the national network.

However, we recognise that institutions have different needs and readiness levels, and we are happy to explore what form of engagement is most appropriate for your situation.

Contact our team to start that conversation.

Working with BioGrid

BioGrid provides support throughout the entire research lifecycle, not just during the setup phase. Once a study is underway, our team is available to assist with data queries, protocol amendments, ongoing ethics reporting, changes in study scope, and any operational issues that arise.

Our goal is to be a consistent, knowledgeable partner throughout your project, so that the team supporting your study understands its history, its data, and its governance arrangements from beginning to end.

Yes. BioGrid has experience supporting research collaborations that extend beyond Australian borders, including studies that involve data linkage and sharing with international partner institutions.

Cross-jurisdictional research of this kind requires careful attention to governance and privacy requirements in each jurisdiction, and BioGrid's team can advise on the considerations applicable to your specific collaboration.

Yes. BioGrid's team provides guidance and support to research teams at all levels of experience with linked health data. For teams new to this kind of research, we can help you understand the characteristics and appropriate use of linked datasets, the analytical considerations that apply to linked data studies, and the governance obligations that come with access to integrated health data.

We are committed to building capability as well as providing access.

BioGrid's services are provided on a project basis, with costs reflecting the specific data, governance, and analytical support requirements of each study. For researchers preparing grant applications, BioGrid can provide a formal quotation and cost description suitable for inclusion in funding submissions.
